Chicago - A Chicago tradition comes to the South Side Thursday morning: Garrett Popcorn is opening their first-ever stand-alone shop in the Chatham neighborhood.
The new store at 87th and Cottage Grove opens at 11 a.m. There was already a line outside the door three hours before opening.
Garrett Popcorn has been a Chicago institution since 1949, and the Chatham location is their first stand-alone store.
Scott Schroeder, the CFO of Garrett Popcorn Shops, said they chose to open a South Side location because they have a loyal base of customers there, who often drive into the city and circle the block while a partner stands in line for popcorn.
The new location will have 17 parking spots, Schroeder said, so no circling the block will be necessary -- he hopes.
In honor of the opening, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. they will be passing out free treat-sized bags of the Chicago mix, and later in the evening will give away free cups of cider.
All day, customers will get a free Garrett Christmas tree ornament with purchase.
