AT GARRETT POPCORN

A Family Tradition

Garrett Popcorn Shops was started by a female entrepreneur, who developed the now-famous recipes in her family kitchen. The first Shops in Chicago sold CaramelCrisp, CheeseCorn, Buttery and Plain for 5 cents a bag alongside homemade fudge and roasted nuts. Kernels were hot-air popped, CaramelCrisp was cooked in copper kettles, and finished recipes were hand scooped right before fans’ eyes. Just like today.

Since 1949

Our Shops cook Garrett Popcorn in small batches throughout each day and our ecommerce kitchen is no different. Cooked on the day we ship your order, each recipe is made with simple ingredients, never with preservatives, and always by cooks using the same secret family recipes handed across generations. Our quality ingredients, welcoming experience, and (almost) addictive taste has made us the Chicago-style gourmet popcorn for over 70 years.

First Shop

The first Garrett Popcorn Shops opened at 10 West Madison in downtown Chicago. Believe it or not, it was started by a female entrepreneur who brought her secret family popcorn recipes for CaramelCrisp, CheeseCorn, Buttery, and Plain to The Windy City. The great taste, quality ingredients and welcoming experience quickly made Garrett Popcorn Shops a fan-adored, Chicago staple.

1977

Our fans created

“The Mix”

In 1977, two favorite recipes – CaramelCrisp (famously made in copper kettles) and CheeseCorn (made with real cheese) – became an official menu item, called “Chicago Mix” due to fans often requesting an extra, empty bag so they could mix the two together. Today, it is the most popular recipe, known as Garrett Mix in the US and Chicago Mix internationally. Just call it “The Mix”, and we’ll know what you mean.

1982

We continue our

Family Legacy

By 1982, the company was passed down to the founder’s daughter, who grew up in the Shops, making CaramelCrisp. Her handwriting is still at the center of the now iconic Garrett logo. During this time, Garrett Popcorn Shops became deeply embedded into the Chicago community, building a culture of long-time, loyal employees.

Shop Differently

Garrett Popcorn started a mail order business out of the original Randolph Street Shop and launched our first website in 1993. Today, Garrett is available online, for pickup at the Shops, on Postmates, and even at our first drive-thru on the southside of Chicago. No matter how you get it, every order is made fresh daily by our talented cooks in our kitchens.

2005

Family Traditions

In 2005, the Garrett legacy was passed to a new family. As life-long fans, Lance and Megan take pride in upholding the fan-centricity, community legacy and handcrafted traditions.

2009

We feel the

Love from Fans Worldwide

In 2009, we opened our first international Shops in Singapore and Dubai and celebrated our 60th Anniversary. Now, Garrett Popcorn Shops has over fifty Shops across the globe, but we still consider Chicago home.

2017

We welcome

Frango Chocolate

In 2017, Frango Chocolate, another iconic brand loved by many in Chicago and Seattle, joined the Garrett Brands family. Beloved by millions for more than a century, Frango is a one-of-a-kind treat to commemorate any occasion, from the everyday to the extraordinary. Read Frango Story.
